Local School Council

In 1988, the Illinois State General Assembly passed PA85-1418 to reform the Chicago Public Schools. Each school has a Local School Council comprised of the principal, two certified teachers, six parents of students currently attending the school, and two community residents. The Council also has a non-voting student representative who is elected by the student body. The council members were elected for the first time on October 12, 1989. The Local School Council organizes succeeding elections in even-numbered years.

The Local School Council is empowered to:

  • Annually evaluate the performance of the contract principal
  • Decide whether to renew the principal’s four-year contract or to hire a different principal at the end of the contract term
  • Approve or ask for amendments to the expenditure plan prepared by the principal
  • Approve or ask for amendments to the CIWP (school improvement plan)
  • Make recommendations to the principal on textbook selection and curriculum, as long as those recommendations are consistent with the curriculum objectives of the Board and the State
  • Report publicly twice a year on the progress and problems with implementing the CIWP (school improvement plan)
  • Adopt a school uniform or dress code policy in accordance with Board rules and policies
  • Grant the use of assembly halls and classrooms, when not otherwise needed, for public lectures, concerts and other educational social activities, in compliance with Board rules
  • Approve, in accordance with Board policy, receipts and expenditures for all internal accounts of the school and approve all fundraising activities by non-school organizations that use the building.

The council must abide by the provisions of the Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act as well as all other applicable laws, court orders, funding restrictions, etc. A schedule of council meetings and a file of the council's approved minutes are available in the Main Office as well as here: 2018-2019 LSC Approved Meeting Minutes
